"My work explores the experience of sparsely populated public spaces where the built-landscape is gradually eroding, yielding to uncontrolled tangles of plants and early signs of wilderness. Wild City Sampler began with observation of a site like this, captured using digital photography. Through technology, I transformed the photograph into a file readable by a digital embroidery machine. Embroidery-digitizing software interprets image files in surprising ways: often unexpectedly removing or supplementing sections of images. A successful rendering requires a cycle of adjustments in photo-editing software, followed by scrutiny in the embroidery software, until a translation of the image emerges. The digital embroidery machine translates this data into manipulation of thread—actions which are continued by hand during final composition and assembly.
This work negotiates digital translations between software programs to develop a physical process executed by machine. This mechanized procedure generates the materials for creating the final handmade sculptural form. The process of creation moves from physical experience of a place, to digital manipulation of photography, interpretation by machine, and finally to physical interplay of materials and maker.
This interaction of maker and technologies reflects the process of creative expression itself, in which an individual experiences the world and interprets this experience through materials into an object for another person to access. Through these layers of translation, ideas and perspectives can be shared and expanded."
